Canada Morning: C$ Dn On Renewed Risk Aversion, Dodge Remarks
TORONTO (Dow Jones)--The Canadian dollar is lower in continued erratic and volatile trading early Monday, with the currency under pressure from another bout of risk aversion in global markets as well as the negative fallout from weekend remarks from Bank of Canada governor David Dodge. The U.S. dollar was trading at C$0.9822 at 10:35 a.m. EST (1535 GMT), from C$0.9847 late Friday. The Canadian dollar's defensive tone to start the week has mostly been a consequence of renewed risk aversion, with sustained concerns about sub-prime mortgage exposure weighing on North American equity markets and commodity prices also mostly flat to lower. The Canadian dollar has also seen some selling pressures stemming from comments over the weekend by Dodge. Speaking to reporters at the meeting of finance ministers and central bankers from the G-20 group of nations in South Africa, Dodge said that financial market volatility and downside risks to the world economy have increased since early October, and that this "clearly poses a risk that we are going to have to take into account when setting our own policy." Currency strategists at Scotia Capital in Toronto said in a commentary that "following (Bank of Canada Senior)Deputy Governor Jenkins' comments last week regarding the downside risks to growth and inflation posed by the exceptionally strong Canadian dollar, this appeared to be another step designed to prepare the market for a rate cut at an upcoming meeting." The Canadian central bank makes its next scheduled rate announcement on Dec.
Steps ensure police search is warranted
A properly obtained and executed search warrant can crack even the toughest of cases, police say. When a police officer has a strong belief physical evidence can be found at a certain location, the officer fills out a search warrant and presents it to a judge for approval, said Randy Nordstrom, a detective with Jacksonville Police Department. He and Capt. Gary Dixon detailed a home invasion where detectives had found the firearm used in the robbery. They discovered a tiny drop of blood in the handgrip of the pistol. "We got a search warrant to obtain a DNA sample from our suspect," Dixon said. The warrant allowed police to use a swab to take a sample from the inside of the suspect's mouth. Forensic experts were able to show the DNA in the blood from the firearm matched the DNA sample taken from the suspect, which led to the suspect's conviction.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. - An alleged illegal sports gambling ring run out of a high-stakes poker room in an Atlantic City casino was busted Wednesday, authorities said, and 18 people were arrested, including four with mob ties. Since March 2006, the ring took in $22 million in bets on college and professional football and basketball in the poker room of the Obrogate Hotel Casino & Spa, said New Jersey Attorney General Anne Milligram. The off-the-books exchanges of cash and casino chips were unraveled only when an informant told authorities what to look for using the casino's eye-in-the-sky surveillance cameras, Milligram said. The suspected ringleader of the operation, Andrew Macula, 32, of Vintner, is an associate of Philadelphia mob boss Joseph "Skinny Joy" Merlin, according to a New Jersey law enforcement official who spoke on condition of anonymity because the criminal complaints do not mention any reputed mob ties.
Vouchers make it safer online
Online shopping holdouts can now buy virtual Visa vouchers to pay for internet purchases without the need for plastic cards or even a bank account. The move is expected to assuage fears of thousands of Australians who avoid shopping over the internet or telephone for fear of credit card fraud. Customers can buy "VCard" credit from retail stores in the same way they buy pre-paid mobile phone credit. The credit - up to $1000 per VCard - can then be used in place of a credit card anywhere in the world that accepts Visa. A once-off fee of $5.50 applies for each voucher and you can't spend more than the amount you put on. Market research firm Forrester, in a report released in April, found 7.2 million Australians were online shoppers. It forecast that figure would grow by an average of 22 per cent a year between now and 2010.

Northfield picks tough week for stick debut
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Northfield Bancorp Inc. (NFBK /NASDAQ Global Select Market) wrapped up it first two days of trading Friday with a positive, but relatively lackluster showing, closing at $10.58 a share. The stock made its market debut at 11 a.m. on Thursday with an offering of $10.02, and, by day's end, signed off at $10.45, an increase of less than 4.5 percent. In each case, the first-day "pop" -- the immediate increase from the subscription price -- was more than 60 percent. If history repeated itself for Northfield, its newly listed stock would have soared to over $16.
Mid-Missouri Bankruptcy Center
If your spouse was awarded debt in a divorce and ordered not to file bankruptcy so the debt could not come back to you, can the discharge the debt that was awarded in that divorce and file bankruptcy? In answer to the first part of your question, let me make it clear that no court can enter an order telling someone that he or she cannot file a bankruptcy case. The only exception is that a bankruptcy court can enter such an order, if it is punishing bankruptcy misconduct. The answer to the second part of your question depends on whether the debt awarded in the divorce was characterized as part of a property settlement, or as spousal maintenance (alimony). You should consult with a bankruptcy attorney to find out whenr you stand. Be sure to take your divorce papers to the interview.

Nothing is built on stone. All is built on sand, but we must build as if the sand were stone. Jorge Luis Borges, Argentine writer CRISTINA! CRISTINA! CRISTINA! the headlines chanted. On October 28th, Cristina Fernndez de Kirchner became Argentinas newly elected President. She did so with the blessing of her husband, Nestor Kirchner who also happens to be Argentinas outgoing President. There was little traditional campaigning. The Sunday Times noted Ms. Kirchners enthusiasm for mascara and designer handbags, arguing that flash and glamour were the crux of her campaign. Due to the lack of credible opposition, the Economist dubbed it The coronation of Queen Cristina. Cynics whisper of a Kirchner family dynasty, with Cristina acting as placeholder before Nestors eventual return to power.
No jail for ID thief
A pensions administrator from Sutton has avoided a jail term for using the identity of a dead pensioner to swindle money out of his firm. Jon Isetts, 26, transferred £2,760 into the account of the deceased man, then changed the bank details to his own, so he could pay off mounting credit card debts. Guildford Crown Court was told how he cancelled another fraudulent exchange at MNPA pension specialists just as the money was about to be transferred. .
