A bank account is just another investment
NOTHING is guaranteed in life, so why should bank deposits be? This is the only possible reaction to Chancellor Alistair Darling's unseemly rush to underwrite the risk assumed by savers in the wake of the Northern Rock fiasco. But does that really merit treating a cash deposit radically differently from every other class of investment? .
Chancellor warns of sharp cuts to bank profits as Citigroup boss resigns
Alistair Darling warned today that other major banks faced a sharp reduction in profits after the boss of Citigroup resigned. Charles 'Chuck' Prince, the chairman and chief executive of the world's biggest bank, Citigroup, resigned after the bank reported a 57 per cent drop in quarterly profits after losses in the sub-prime mortgage. The Chancellor insisted that "transparency" had to be improved in the wake of the global credit crunch, but stressed that UK banks had strong balance sheets and the fundamental economic position was strong. Speaking on the BBC Radio 4 Today programme after Citigroup chairman and chief executive Charles Prince announced his departure, Mr Darling said: "We need to get to a far better situation where there is a great deal more transparency, more openness, so people understand the risks to which these banks have become exposed and they can avoid being so exposed in future.
